Master of Science in One Health
Master of Science in One Health
Program Overview
What is One Health?
The Shreiber School of Veterinary Medicine of Rowan University is proud to offer a forward-thinking, interdisciplinary Master of Science in One Health (MSOH) program, launching Fall 2026. This innovative graduate program responds to the growing global demand for professionals who can address complex health challenges at the intersection of human, animal, and environmental health.
One Health is a globally recognized framework that integrates medicine, veterinary science, public health, environmental science, and policy. The MSOH program provides a rigorous academic foundation combined with immersive experiential learning, preparing graduates to pursue careers and advanced training in biomedical research, applied research, translational research in health sciences, public health, global health, and policy-focused careers.
Courses are taught by SSVM’s experienced faculty and emphasize One Health concepts through clinical, diagnostic, field-based, and research-driven perspectives.
What will I learn in the MSOH program?
The MSOH is a 33-credit program, consisting of:
Core Coursework (21 credits)
- Foundations of One Health theory and interdisciplinary health systems
- Research design, epidemiology, and biostatistics for population health analysis
- Critical evaluation of scientific literature and scientific communication
- Bioinformatics and data analytics in One Health research
- Global health, emerging infectious diseases, and zoonotic risk assessment
- Crisis management and emergency response to public health threats
- One Health, One Welfare, and Environmental Sustainability
Research Practicum Experience (12 credits)
Students will complete two intensive 6-credit research practicums. These mentored experiences may take place in biomedical research laboratories, clinical settings, public health environments, or field-based sites. Practicums allow students to apply One Health principles to real-world problems while building a professionally relevant portfolio of technical and analytical skills.
Professional Training and Experiential Learning
A defining strength of the MSOH program is its emphasis on hands-on, applied research and analytical training. Courses such as Global Health Issues in One Health and Bioinformatics in One Health provide students with practical exposure to analytical tools, data-driven methodologies, and interdisciplinary approaches used in population health, applied research, and translational research in health sciences.
Graduates will develop core competencies in:
- Human and veterinary public health principles
- Applied biostatistics and interpretation of health data
- STEM-focused oral and written scientific communication through journal clubs, scientific writing coursework, and seminar presentations
- Design, execution, and analysis of interdisciplinary One Health research
This comprehensive training prepares MSOH graduates for professional roles in public health agencies, global and non-governmental organizations, industry, regulatory and policy settings, research environments, and academia. The program also serves as a strong academic foundation for students pursuing advanced training in MD, DO, DVM, or Ph.D. programs including potential dual-degree pathways.
Why Choose Rowan University for Graduate Studies in One Health?
- Balanced Integration Across All One Health Domains: The MSOH program at the Shreiber School offers a truly balanced curriculum that equally integrates human, animal, and environmental health. This systems-based approach prepares graduates to contribute effectively to cross-sectoral teams and address complex global health challenges with confidence and clarity.
- Robust Experiential and Research-Based Learning: Applied learning is central to the MSOH experience. Students will need to complete 12 credits of mentored research practicum and 4 credits through a structured Seminar Series and Journal Clubs, engaging deeply in real-world One Health research from the outset. Practicum experiences may take place in public health departments, diagnostic laboratories, clinical and translational research environments, or academic institutions, fostering applied problem-solving skills and professional readiness.
- Accessibility and Affordability: Aligned with Rowan University’s mission of access, affordability, and impact, the MSOH program is competitively priced and does not require the GRE. This approach lowers barriers to entry while maintaining academic rigor and attracts a diverse cohort of students from both clinical and non-clinical backgrounds, enriching the learning environment.
- Unique Dual-Degree Pathway Opportunities: Rowan’s MSOH is uniquely positioned to integrate with other graduate programs, including DVM, DO, and MD degrees. These dual-degree pathways allow students to advance their clinical and research training simultaneously, an opportunity that is uncommon among One Health programs nationwide.
- Strategic Location and Collaborations: Situated within a dynamic biomedical corridor, the Shreiber School maintains strong partnerships with the New Jersey Animal Health Diagnostic Laboratory, regional biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies, and public health agencies. These collaborations provide exceptional access to internships, applied research, and career opportunities in high-demand health sectors.
