The Farrier Service at the Shreiber School of Veterinary Medicine of Rowan University provides comprehensive hoof care for horses throughout South Jersey. Working as an integral part of the Large Animal Field Service, our farrier collaborates closely with Rowan veterinarians and referring veterinarians to provide evidence-based hoof care that supports equine health, soundness, and athletic performance.

Farrier Services Offered

Our Farrier Service provides a full range of hoof care services, including:

• Routine hoof trimming
• Front and full-set shoeing
• Corrective and therapeutic shoeing
• Glue-on shoes
• Hoof casting and support techniques
• Foal and developmental limb deformity management
• Laminitis and navicular disease support
• Hoof crack stabilization and reconstruction
• Hoof “balance” evaluation
• Consultation for performance and sport horses
• Collaboration with referring veterinarians for lameness evaluation and treatment planning

Every horse receives a thorough evaluation of hoof health, conformation, gait, and medical history before a treatment plan is developed.

A Collaborative Approach

Successful management of many equine foot and lameness conditions requires close communication between the veterinarian and farrier. Our service is designed around this collaborative philosophy.

When appropriate, our farrier works directly with Rowan veterinarians, referring veterinarians, farriers and horse owners to develop practical treatment plans based on clinical examination, diagnostic imaging, and the individual needs of the horse.

Teaching the Next Generation

As part of the Shreiber School of Veterinary Medicine, the Farrier Service also supports the education of future veterinarians.

Veterinary students have opportunities to observe and participate in hoof examinations, trimming, shoeing procedures, gait analysis, and discussions regarding hoof anatomy, biomechanics, and therapeutic farriery. These experiences reinforce the importance of collaboration between veterinarians and farriers while preparing graduates to work effectively within multidisciplinary healthcare teams.

Evidence-Based Hoof Care

The Rowan Farrier Service incorporates current research and objective assessment techniques into clinical practice whenever appropriate. Care decisions are based on careful evaluation of each horse's conformation, movement, medical condition, intended use, and response to previous treatment.

Our goal is not simply to apply shoes, but to improve comfort, function, and long-term hoof health through thoughtful, individualized care.

Scheduling an Appointment

Farrier appointments are available through the Large Animal Field Service throughout the South Jersey service area.

To help provide efficient scheduling and coordinate care with veterinary appointments when needed, please have the following information available when requesting an appointment:

• Horse's name, age, breed, and use
• Current hoof or lameness concerns
• Previous farrier history
• Recent veterinary examinations or diagnostic imaging
• Type of service requested (trim, routine shoeing, therapeutic shoeing, consultation, etc.)
